The Etxarri gaztetxe in Errekalde is a place where you can put into practice what you have learned in the Kukutza III gaztetxe, which has been colored in black and white for about thirteen years, and continue to make your dreams come true. After the demolition of Kukutza, the members of the youth assembly redefined the project for three years, taking part in other occupation projects in Bilbao. Considering that it was essential to have a youth center in the district, we occupied the Etxarri gaztetxe in July 2014. Today, we are at risk of eviction, but we continue to pursue our practices. In 2016 we turned 2 years old.
The building was in very poor condition at first: completely burnt, dirty and full of rubbish. So, we spent the first few months tidying up the gaztetxe in the neighborhood: cleaning, installing water and electricity, installing drains, and so on. We still have a lot of work to do, but at least we managed to build a tidy place. Several projects are already underway and are gradually taking shape, such as a boxing team, txalaparta or jembe workshops. In this way, we have gradually begun to give strength to the neighborhood again, offering cultural alternatives. We hold weekly assemblies, work with neighborhood associations and run the gaztetxe with self-management and neighborhood work.
