DOCU SCREENING & DISCUSSION: "To shoot an elephant" by Alberto Arce and Mohammad Rujailahk (2009)
Short url:
🍉🍉 On Thursday 08th of February at 18:00 we will watch 'To shoot an elephant' together.🍉🍉
This 2009 documentary by Spanish Alberto Arce and Palestinian Mohammad Rujailahk about the 2008-2009 Gaza war, shows everyday life in the region through a series of vignettes Alberto Arce filmed between December 25, 2008 and January 16, 2009. The excerpts focus particularly on the ambulance services (international aid) that pick up the wounded and the martyrs from the streets. Mohammad Rujailah, the co-director is also one of the film's central figures. He calls out the international community and its humanitarian 'help'. The film's title refers to a 1936 essay by George Orwell in which he denounces colonial politics. If we have time and energy after the screening, we will read extracts of that essay
We thought it would be interesting to screen this documentary to have a first-hand account of the 2008-2009 siege, after the previous screening more focused on external/international framing of the war (i.e. U.S discourse).
Snacks and drinks will be available on donation at the bar! ;)
