Conversation with Simon(e) Van Saarloos
Heteropatriarchal monogamy, the default way of building and organising our relationships. Remains invisible in our tendencies of relating to one another, treated as the 'normal way' of being. We dont realise that we are effectively prioirtising romantic bonds and devaluing friendships, forcing our connections into pre-made, mass produced molds, failing to notice the richness of possibilities between us.
Simon(e) Van Saarloos, writer, artist and curator based between Berkeley, California and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They are the author of six books and have contributed to over more than thirty edited volumes, books, and journals. In the book Playing Monogamy, with great skill and finese opens our eyes so we can see the script were enacting and we can see what it is that we can create instead. Inoculates us against the fear of change, agitates us to experiment and deeply listen to what it is that we and others need and desire.
This conversation is a chance to ask questions and give answers about how to implement the strategies proposed in the book, share our stories and difficulties in the processes of deconstruction and meet other people determined to change the way they relate to one another.
