Casa Da Horta is a cultural and environmental association, based on local action with a horizontal decision making structure. It aims to search and create alternative ways of living questioning the existing layers of culture, habits, lifestyles and political state.

Sharing ideas, critical thinking, ethical consuming, consumption of seasonal/local food, broadening the perspective of animal and human rights, investigating alternative horizontal usage of the communities/urban spaces, creating artifacts by reusing leftovers, repairing and exchanging are just some core issues of Casa Da Horta.

For us ecological does not mean that you have to buy expensive organic and biological stuff (even though sometimes it is inevitable) or point the finger to others about malpractices but that you try to think and act about all that causes harm to the earth and to the community around you, so that you start thinking about buying or exchanging things and food from your neighbour or remake your old pants into a bag or carpet. We like diversity but do not support inequality.

We are non-profit organization but as everyone we need some resources to keep the place, people there and give you good food.

In our kitchen where is no chefs, waiters or cooks, we prepare mostly local vegan or vegetarian dishes, as a response to the exploitation of animals, humans and environment in food production around the world. We get vegetables from local farmers - Da Quinta para Mesa in Lousada and from family farmers Joaquim and Rosa Lima and Sr. Alexandre. Fernando Paiva brings us home made apple, elderberry or grape juices. You can also drink the artesanal beer “Sovina” from local producers in Porto and we have coffee from Zapatistas! 

We serve lunches and dinners from Tuesday to Saturday. On Fridays we do Francesinha Vegetariana – typical Porto dish, now we do it with vegan cheese. Saturday is dedicated to special menu (various cuisines from around the world, regions, or some other theme…) where you can also participate proposing the special dinner and cooking with us!

It is a place which is open for people to share their knowledge and interests without thinking about big financial gain, but we always offer you some food and good company. Everyone can become an associate and organize here concerts, art exhibitions, movie nights, presentations, workshops, projects and debates of alternative, sustainable, environmental, artistic or social ideas. Or just come and enjoy our events.
