Fietsenwerkplaats Mutual Aid
Short url:
Bicycle workshop Mutual Aid is about reciprocal help, self-organization, 'do it together' more than 'do it yourself' and a lot of bicycles. We give away bikes for free to people who can't or don't want to buy a bike…...(Not because we think free is good, but it's the best way to show right now that it's really something else — a glimpse of another world. ) We’re not telling you what that world will look like, this will be a collective enterprise. We are not part of the municipality, Coa, Wij-team, church, mosque or political party. We like to see ourselves as a part of individuals, small groups and larger initiatives who think that people could and should deceide about their life.
Free means free of money, but we expect something different from you. When we do something for you, we expect you to do something for someone else at another time ( because we already have anything ). At the moment we don’t accept donations and also prefernot to get any other form of payment like sweets, alcohol or food ( we do like nuts and fruit though ). If you really want to donate something you can do that by bringing broken bikes and bike parts. Mutual Aid differs from: We do something for you (A) then you have do something for us (B). We like to see that A helps B – B helps C – C helps D and so on. It’s up to you whether you do that or not – fortunately we don’t have to think for someone else, because you can do that yourself
We refurbish bicycles that would otherwise be thrown away. In addition, we do small repairs to city bikes and often ask if people want to do it themselves, together with us or by us. Many people want to do it together. This creates conversations with a beautiful dynamic and very different than when it is not free. I often say it: 'The social is probably more important than the bicycles.' We’re not just helping the poor. Everyone is welcome and we are not going to check how much money you have in your account.
