DIARY OF A LOST GIRL   1929
(Tagebuch einer Verlorenen)
Directed by G.W. Pabst
113 minutes
German inter-titles with English subtitles

Actress Louise Brooks was one of the brightest enchantresses of all cinema. Her flickering image in silent films ignited the erotic passions of both men and women. What an amazing fusion of sexuality and style. She was an American who left for Europe where she made her two greatest gems with German director G.W. Pabst... Pandora's Box, and Diary of a Lost Girl.

Just to set up the premise, the young female protagonist Thymian (Louise Brooks) is the shy and naive daughter of a pharmacist. One night she is seduced/raped by her father's assistant. When it turns out that she's pregnant, her father tries to force her to marry her assailant. She refuses, which results in her running away and breaking from her past. Throwing herself defenseless into the perilous real world, she must find her own way to survive. This film was censored like hell, with different parts taken out in different countries. This screening will be the recent reconstructed version, adding material from all available sources making this the most complete vision of the film ever. A masterpiece of the silent era. Also starring Valeska Gert.

This will be a high-definition projection.
