Medea by Pier Paolo Pasolini is only very loosely based on the eponymous play by Euripides about the hero Jason, who meets Medea, the strong-willed daughter of the king, during his search for the Golden Fleece. Instead, Pasolini offers a Freudian-Marxist view on the concept of myth, which is accompanied by an eclectic soundtrack of traditional Iranian and Japanese music. Medea is played by opera singer Maria Callas, in her only, but very powerful movie role.
