Ciné Interzone: Dekalog 9 + Ken Russell's Delius
Short url:
DEKALOG 9 1988
Directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski
59 minutes
In Polish with English subtitles
Krzysztof Kieslowski's treatment of the ninth commandment, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife," focuses on a despondent husband who learns from his doctor that he is impotent. This throws him into a fit of despair, and he returns home to his wife to break the news. She tells him that it doesn't matter, that she still loves him. He tells her that he would prefer to take another lover. This is one of the short films made by Krzysztof Kieslowski based on the ten commandments. Once again, Kubrick found these films to be a rare example of perfection in the cinema.

SONG OF SUMMER : FREDERICK DELIUS 1968
Directed by Ken Russell
73 minutes
In English
British director Ken Russell made a series of imaginative biographical films for the BBC in the Sixties. Those films focused on the lives of various writers, artists and music composers. This one is about the last years of the music composer Frederick Delius.
Delius lead a wild bohemian life until with his death from syphilis in his home at Grez-sur-Loing, France. Across the water in England, Eric Fenby was a composer who was reduced to the humiliating level of making commercial music for Laurel and Hardy comedies. He was utterly depressed, and felt his life was utterly pointless. Then one day he read a newspaper article about the situation of the dying Delius, so he dropped everything he was doing and traveled to France to help Delius out. The script of this film is based on his memories of those events.
Artists like Russell are a rare breed. He was a natural eccentric, and his many of his films are explosions of fantasy. This one is very different... here he takes all of his creative concentration and focuses it in order to create a thing of beauty. This is perhaps Ken Russell's most bittersweet film, a subtle movie about memories and death... a definitive mood piece. It is considered to be one of Russell's masterpieces.
Both films will be high-definition screenings.
