This month's Psychick Cinema is devoted to the 'White Panther,' John Sinclair, and the psychedelic revolution he led in the US during the 1960s.

We're happy to mention that John S. will be on-hand for the evening!

The film will be proceded by a lecture by Christian Greer, entitled "Total Assault on Culture: Spiritual Brotherhoods, Urban Tribes, and Psychedelic Churches in the mid-1960s."

Twenty to Life: The Life & Times of John Sinclair
Steve Gebhardt | 2007 | USA | 86 min | digital

In the mid-1960s, the US escalated its undeclared war against the spiritual brotherhoods, urban tribes, and psychedelic churches that emerged in major cities across the US. Spear-headed by the FBI, this wave of repression targeted the most charismatic figureheads that had emerged from the psychedelic underground. The  persecution of these men and women, as well as thousands of stoned visionaries, gave rise to a new cultural folk-hero: the 'pot martyr'. The most famous 'pot martyr' to emerge from this period was John Sinclair, minister of propaganda of the White Panther Party, marijuana advocate, and rock n' rock beatnik poet. Throughout the 1960s, Sinclair dedicated his life to fostering a revolutionary culture of free love, racial harmony, and psychedelic communalism in his home state of Michigan; however, in 1969, he was sentenced to serve a minimum mandatory prison sentence of ten years. His only "crime" was giving two marijuana cigarettes to an undercover narcotics agent. However, Sinclair was not destined to serve the entirety of his sentence, as an army of psychedelic warriors rose up to free him. This month's Psychick Cinema is devoted to Sinclair's story, as well as the larger spiritual revolution he led.
