GRAPES OF DEATH   1978(Les raisins de la mort)Directed by Jean Rollin90 minutes

In French with English subtitles

Off-beat French director Jean Rollin is mostly known for his dreamlike sexy horror films, with a deep poetic edge. He was coming from decadent romantic poetry as his primary influence, but when he translated it to the screen he came up with some absolutely original. Having said that, this film stands out as being unique in his work. It is much more in the horror vein, and therefore more open to a wider audience than anything else he created. Because of this new more integrated style, it is considered by many to be Rollin's best movie.
Somewhere in the French countryside is the small village Roublès, which is preparing for their annual wine festival. But this year will be radically different than any other in history, because the vineyards have been sprayed with a new chemical pesticide, turning anyone who drinks the wine into anarchic zombies. What unfolds is a dream-like environmentalist zombie movie, with a not-so-subtle ecological message. In this film we also have the lovely Brigitte Lahaie, who was a cult porn actress in the 70s. But, like all of Rollin's creations, this one has a different edge than most films of the genre, with one person even calling it a "living-dead poem". A movie flowing with blood and wine.
This will be a high-definition projection.
