*** What it's about. ***
Police violence is a global problem. According to data collected by various organisations*, every year thousands of people are victims of violence by police officers. In many cases, killings occur, and the victims are often people from ethnic or social minorities.
The most glaring examples of police violence come from countries where the social and political situation is complicated. In Brazil, for example, more than 6,000 people were killed by police intervention in 2020. In the United States, according to FBI data, more than 1,000 people were killed by police officers in 2019, and the overwhelming majority of victims were non-white and people from ethnic minorities.
Moreover, not all incidents of police brutality are documented or reported. Often victims are afraid to report officer violence, and in some countries the media and human rights organisations are repressed for publishing information on the subject.
There is no shortage of examples of abuse and violence in Poland either. According to the European Commission's 2020 report on the human rights situation in Poland, police abuse, such as physical violence, the use of unjustified coercive measures or the lack of response to cases of police violence, is still a significant problem. The report also highlighted that there are still problems with the effectiveness of prosecuting police officers who have committed acts of violence in Poland. According to the Police Headquarters itself, in 2020, police officers used force in more than 15,000 cases - so we can only guess at the actual scale. And we are not forgetting the people murdered by the Polish police, who in only a few cases can count on media attempts to hold officers accountable.
Join us at Dance Against Police event and be part of the global backlash against police violence. The event is a benefit for those repressed at the Polish-Belarusian border because we will never forget the scale of violence used as much by officers of the Border Guard, the Territorial Defence Forces or the Polish Army.
When violence by the services becomes the norm, the only answer can be our solidarity!
