Join Feminist Fightback for a screening of Palme d'Or winner ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days’ (1h 53m), a Romanian film by Cristian Mungiu, set during the final years of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s rule. Abortion was illegal in Romania at that time, and the film follows friends Otilia and Găbița as they attempt to obtain an illegal abortion on the black market when Găbița becomes pregnant. ‘4 Months…’ is a minimalist, realist portrayal of the danger pregnant people face in states which deny access to abortion.

When the film was released in 2007, abortion was still illegal in Ireland. In 2023, we’re in a world where Roe V Wade has been overturned, making abortion illegal in many states. The hard right around the world have put gender and reproductive justice at the centre of their discursive and policy agendas, attacking trans healthcare, information for young people about sexuality and ‘non-traditional’ families, alongside abortion rights. The US Supreme Court decision was a powerful and painful reminder that our rights are not settled, that we have to fight to keep what we have and to push for more. We have to fight if we don’t want abortion to look like scared, vulnerable, exploited people waiting in hotel rooms for procedures or drugs that they’re not sure are safe, risking criminalisation in the process.

We’ll be hosting a discussion after the film, which will be a great chance to find out more about the organising Feminist Fightback are doing around threats to reproductive justice in the UK. We’d love to you to join us.

Please note, the film contains scenes of medical procedures and sexual exploitation.
