A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH   1946(Stairway to Heaven) Directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger 96 minutes In English
This beautiful little film is a mix between a fantasy and a romantic drama. Made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (The Red Shoes), this dazzling British movie starts off with David Niven as a pilot on his way home to England from a World War II bombing mission. But he has been hit, and his plane is descending. Surrounded by fire, he has given up all hope, and the only thing he can do is make one last radio call to his home base. The woman who answers is a young Allied radio operator named June (Kim Hunter), with whom he shares his last thoughts and words.
What a magnificent opening to this movie which explores a world between life and death. Its vision is astounding, and bizarre. The special effects we find in a beautiful movie like this are not the sort that we have in films today, attempting to be as "real" as possible. In a movie like this the effects are more inventive, sensual and poetic. Besides it being visually breathtaking, it also has a riveting script with a sharp sense of humor. Some people think this is the best film ever made, and it is a damn special one. Filmed in a rich technicolor, there is only one way to see this gem... on the big screen.

This will be a high-definition projection.
