SMART Home Light Bulb Flashing Session (hack your wifi light bulbs!)
Short url:
On 20 January let's meet at LAG to spend an afternoon messing around with hacking and re-programming smart home light bulbs and any other smart home stuff you want to bring / have lying around the home gathering dust.
We will spend the afternoon trying to liberate our SMART home light-bulbs from the control of random corporations and if we make head-way, see what fun things we can do with them.
We will be at LAG from 14h to 18h30 and perhaps later. We will try to provide as much electronic tools and software as needed, but please bring more equipment as the world of smart home devices involves many incompatible protocols and equipment.
Much could be discussed about the ways that smart home devices introduce a new level of surveillance of the domestic sphere in general. The idea for the 20 January session originates from thinking about how wifi light-bulbs often have software that enables auto-update of them from computers outside your home network without your knowledge. This is like sending your wifi password to a random stranger on the internet. Hackers have found ways to make these light bulbs less surveillance friendly. Flashing these devices with new firmware can also make it possible to use these for artistic purposes.
