Benefit VoKu for the „Bushulo Mother and Child Speciality Center“ in Hawassa, Ethiopia
We are a crew from former (and present) members of ‘Foodbank Maastricht’, where food is regularly rescued from being thrown away, given away, and transformed into three-course meals, saving hundreds of kilos of food weekly, and feeding hundreds in Maastricht.
On this Thursday, we are going to cook a wonderful three-course meal from rescued ingredients in Joe’s Garage, raising money for the healthcare of mothers and children in the south of Ethiopia.
As part of the safe motherhood program, the „Bushulo Mother and Child Speciality Center“ in Hawassa supports women during and after pregnancy. Given that the mortality rate in young mothers as well as new-borns is still extremely high in Ethiopia, structures like this one are urgently needed. There, women are receiving information about hygiene and nutrition during pregnancy, as well as information on risks while giving birth.
Most women in Ethiopia give birth at home, which is associated with hygienic risks and a lack of appropriate medical support. The Speciality Center offers an alternative to that and since its opening in 2022, 40% of the women living in the area go there to give birth and receive support. Besides that, the Speciality Center also provides general medical support and screening for mothers, children, and teenage girls. It furthermore functions as educational institution for apprentices from the local community and hosts courses and workshops on medical care for professionals from the whole country. This multiplies knowledge and creates a central point for healthcare in Hawassa and beyond.
