Finally a film that we don't have to worry that Disney will remake! This is director Pier Paolo Pasolini's transgressive, feral, uncompromising, visionary film about the state of the modern world.
This allegorical film alternates between two stories. The first one is set on a volcanic island, and it follows a man in utter poverty who is living a barbaric existence. The second thread is set in American-occupied Germany during its postwar "economic miracle" and follows the life of a powerful industrialist who is raking in the cash by exploiting everyone underneath him. This is a movie about wastelands, both primitive and civilized.
These two stories play against each other in complementary ways, both in content and style. The way they are constructed is poetic... therefore it's left up to you to draw your own conclusions. Pigpen is considered to be one of Pasolini's most hauntingly original works, both comic and horrific... both factual and symbolic. It is very offbeat, and follows no pre-existing template. Pasolini considered this movie to be thematically part of a duet (the other film being Teroema) which together he called "poems in the form of howl and despair".
In a modern world where greed is spinning out of all proportion, this is a perfect time to take a look at Pasolini's dark warning about the consequences of excess and unlimited power, told with a piercing black humor. Pigpen features an amazing cast including Jean-Pierre Léaud, Marco Ferreri, Ugo Tognazzi, Pierre Clémenti and Anne Wiazemsky.
This will be a high-definition screening.
