Considered to be one of the most surprising and riveting films in the history of Italian cinema, this neglected gem is shown far too seldom. The director himself, Elio Petri, has the reputation of being a sort of black sheep of modern cinema, a filmmaker who has been unjustly marginalized precisely because his films were diverse, visionary and innovative. In many film and art schools they teach students to find a recognizable style, and then repeat it endlessly. Petri on the other hand, was never a formula filmmaker, and with every film you can expect the unexpected.

This is a surrealistic police-thriller whose controversial theme still echoes today. I don't want to go into the story... it's best if you enter the film cold, without any knowledge of it. But I can point out that it fits well with our present questioning of the role of police in our society.  It stars the magnificent Gian Maria Volonté in the most iconic role of his career, and the dazzling soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone at the height of his powers... certainly one of the best soundtracks ever composed. Besides Volonté, it also co-stars the Brazilian cult actress Florinda Bolkan. The film exploded when it was released—picking up the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and winning both the Grand Jury prize and the Critic's prize at the Cannes film festival. And then it was promptly pushed aside and forgotten about, rarely screened outside its home country.
