Trouble Everyday 2001
Short url:
Directed by Claire Denis
101 minutes

This flick is a haunting vision of desire gone haywire. Light on story and big on aesthetics, it moves silently like a sexy, but terrible dream. It explores the idea of modern love in two different forms—romance and lust. Where does the romance end, and the animal passion take over? The camera work captivating, and the story that unfolds is a strange mix... harsh, poetic and haunting... but warning—it is also not for the weak of heart. Vincent Gallo plays an American who is visiting Paris with his new wife, a man with an extremely dark secret.... and it certainly is one of Gallo's most unusual roles.
Trouble Every Day is a vastly underated French psycho-horror vampire film from the great female director Claire Denis (Beau Travail) and besides Gallo it also stars the fabulous Beatice Dalle (Betty Blue). Although it was attacked when it was first released, over the last years it has gained a cult following and has been the subject of much critical debate. It was one of the first films that started the "The New European Extreme" movement in cinema, which is largely concerned with transgressive sexuality.
What a perfectly unique film this is.... from the elliptical narrative that never lets on more than it needs to, to the stripped down and reserved performances, to the moody cinematography. The mood is both icy and intimate at the same time, and perhaps reveals the loneliness behind our passion. The sense of menace created by its mysterious narrative is often interrupted by sudden explosive blasts, making a link between art-film and horror film... something that can be compared, perhaps, to the work of David Cronenberg. With a dark and haunting music score by the British chamber-rock band Tindersticks.
