Four rebellious young boys at a repressive French boarding school plot and execute a revolt against their teachers and take over the school. This featurette directed by Jean Vigo, was released in 1933, and subsequently banned in France until 1945. The film draws extensively on Vigo's boarding school experiences to depict a repressive educational establishment in which surreal acts of rebellion occur.

The child Ernesto doesn’t want to go to school any more because, as he says, all he is taught there is things he doesn’t know. A short film by the duo Jean Marie Straub and Danièlle Huillet, adapted from a short story by Marguerite Duras.


This screening is part of ‘40 chairs, 40 films, 40 years’, Filmhuis Cavia’s 40th anniversary program which will be held all throughout 2023, rewiring and re-reeling images from our past, projecting new ones towards our future.
