(El Sol del Membrillo )
Directed by Victor Erice
134 minutes
In Spanish with English subtitles

In the autumn of 1990, Spanish director Victor Erice (Spirit of the Beehive, El Sur) made a film in collaboration with renowned artist Antonio Lopez Garcia. In his studio in Madrid, Garcia begins a new painting... the subject is a quince tree in his courtyard. In this pseudo-documentary we follow him as he meticulously prepares the work, and we watch his dilemmas and persistence in trying to achieve his goal. Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has hailed Quince Tree as an absolutely essential film, and that it had a huge impact upon his own filmmaking.

In this piece of magic Victor Erice gives us a sublime portrait of the creative process, and like the films of Kiarostami, Erice interweaves documentary and fiction together, bringing a cast of non-professional actors into the scene. Erice's films are experimental in a subtle, poetic, illuminating way.... working with light, introspection and real-life fleeting beauty in order to create his narrative. This is a rare screening of this milestone documentary, which is considered by many to be one of the most important films of the last century.
