This month’s collaboration with Asian Movie Night will screen a classic from film director Ozu Yasujiro.
When you are in the boredom of monogamy, people expect scenes from the sofa drama to happen to you. But in real life drama doesn’t really happen. Boredom is closer to a tone or feeling than to a series of causes and effects. Ozu captures the tone of tedious marriage among middle class people in the 50’s in Japan. The role of heterosexuality in his films is very traditional and male-oriented, the virtue for men is to work hard and women to be a good wife. However, it still reflects our society and forms of relationships that are deeply embedded in our minds and habits. Perhaps what we see in Ozu’s film does not apply to the here and now. But we must acknowledge that sexual liberation and women’s right movements arose in different countries in different ways.
