Filmhuis Cavia + Asian Movie Night: Family in the Bubble

Short url:

Minji Ma | 2017 | Zuid-Korea, Finland | 77' | EN subs

In collaboration with Asian Movie Night based in Arhem, Filmhuis Cavia will screen selected films from various Asian countries in Asia every month.

'Asia' is a political term that speaks not just of geography/race but has its own narrative of colonial/imperial/modern history. Asia has been used to frame "others" by reinforcing a sense of exoticism. We would like to invite you to stretch further than that through deepening a cross-cultural understanding. In doing so, we are aware that each country’s social issues are laid out in a different context and we care to pay attention to each other.

Our first selected film is Family in the Bubble, directed by Minji Ma. This film is an autobiography of the director’s family, showing their struggle in a speculative housing crisis in Seoul. Ma’s family tragic echos the dark side of the monstrous modernization that South Korea went through in the past decades, yet it is a witty and charming film.
