ONLINE: Right to the City and Civic Activism in Prague ~ domof mooy
Because of the epidemic situation, the event happens online, you'll find it on Friday at 19:00 here: https://call.nolog.cz/b/ale-ttv-taq
Prague is being considered as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. However, it faces many problems caused both historically (socialist development and post-socialist privatization) or as a consequence of processes of global capitalism (touristification, commodification, gentrification etc.). The lecture will introduce all the current risks of Prague and the specifics of neoliberal governance in a post-socialist city, show specific examples of harmful development, summarize the forms of resistance and also introduce the basic concepts of critical urban theory.
Speaker: Václav Orcígr
Václav Orcígr is urban sociologist at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Charles University and activist. He is a member of the NGO Arnika, where he focuses on the urban development of Prague. He participated in organisation of festivals Rebel Prague and publishes regularly in various media.
Domof-mooy is a series of events starting in October 2020, focused on enabling foreigners living in Prague to understand the local social space better: its history and present. The series is not meant to be simply foreigner-oriented education - its ambition is to create a fruitful discussion among individuals of any origin, Czech people included. After all, there is no clear frontier between "local" and "foreign", as concepts like "home" or "origin" are a complex issue. This is why both "foreigners" and "locals" might benefit from discussing our shared environment.
Structure of the event: Lecture - Questions to the speaker - General discussion
If you have something to say to the topic of the lecture, you can prepare a short speech (5 minutes max) that would be included in the final discussion. For example, you might compare the situation in the Czech Republic with a country that you know, and so on.
