Filmhuis Cavia presents two outdoor screenings in collaboration with Budapest/WG-terrein on Pesthuislaan. On Friday 14 August a late 1970s musical comedy masterpiece runs through French (and European, American) colonial history, independence and civil rights movements from an Afro-Caribbean perspective. And on Saturday 15 August De Stilte rond Christine M. (A Question of Silence) deals with a group of women who have never met before but who together spontaneously murder a male shopkeeper. We follow a criminal psychiatrist’s interviews with the women to try to ascertain their sanity, and the ensuing court case, with surprising results.

Space limited to 50 max | Weelchair accessible

In case of bad weather the screening will be cancelled. Keep on eye on our website for the latest update.

SUPRISE FILM
1979 | Mauritanië | 110' | FR, EN subs

This late 1970s musical comedy masterpiece runs through French (and European, American) colonial history, independence and civil rights movements from an Afro-Caribbean perspective. From a breathtaking studio setting it examines the Atlantic slave trade and draws similarities to modern migration for cheap labour. Sequences of dance and song slice through four hundred years of oppression, false dawns and empty promises. Outspokenly activist at heart, but also highly entertaining and popular through its stunning choreography, the film operates its politics with filmic and narrative means, and is thus in itself a thrilling document of non-Western struggles for freedom.

+ After the film there will be a wild selection of short movies.
