BAISE MOI
Virginie Despentes & Coralie | 2000 | France | 77'

Twenty years after the stormy release of Baise Moi and at a time where a change in the paradigm of representation seems to materialize, we revisit this landmark of the contestation of roles in cinema. Paradoxically, the success of this film was favoured precisely by its initial misfortune: just a few days after its premiere, Baise Moi was banned from the cinemas by the French justice alleging it showed ‘sex scenes of a deliberate crudeness and images of a particular violence’. The wave of support that the ban provoked and the disobedience of some theatres that nonetheless kept showing the film exposed the hypocrisy of the legal authorities. The veritable transgression of Baise Moi was not to present bloody and sexual scenes as so many other works did at the time but the fact that lustful women executed them.

Baise Moi is a genre film that disrupts the premises of action cinema. The road trip of Manu (Raffaëla Anderson) and Nadine (Karen Lancaume) can provoke divided sentiments of excitement and disgust but above all, it stands out as an exercise of liberation that resolutely refuses to speak the language of victims.
