GEORGE 2018
Directed by Jeffrey Perkins
120 minutes

This is a new documentary about the visionary anti-artist George Maciunas, who kick-started the international avant-garde art movement Fluxus back in the 1960s. This creative movement was a radical collective venture, and it still influences loads of artists today. The outrageous performances they unleashed involved Yoko Ono, John Cage, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young and the surreal video artist Nam June Paik. These were works done on a grand scale, not only in terms of aesthetics, but also in their intervention into society. It burst the trendy art scene at the seams, spilling over into all areas of life and society. Fluxus was musical, graphic, theatrical, cinematic... a furious explosion in every direction, breaking down the barriers between art and life.
This film is a patchwork of interviews and archival documentation laying out this monumental plan, a scheme that makes everything in the art world today seem petty. George Maciunas, who was Lithuanian, not only had wild ideas, but also a crazy personal life... and this flick captures his fiery creativity, but also his commitment to cooperative aims.
Director Jeff Perkins will be present for this special free event, and I (Jeffrey B) will battle things out in the Cavia boxing-ring with him.
This will be a high-definition screening.
