The Incident
Short url:
THE INCIDENT 1967 Directed by Larry Peerce 99 minutes In English
This piece of cinematic dynamite is riveting as hell, a forgotten urban neo-noir thriller starring Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now) as a two-bit punk who hangs around with his sidekick (Tony Musante) causing havoc wherever they go. They are the dark side of the anti-authoritarian 'cool' generation. They cruise the streets of the Bronx in New York City until they end up in the subway, where they hijack 14 passengers through intimidation. Most of the film takes place in that little subway carriage, and it's amazing how an entire world opens up using such a limited space. As the people are threatened we see the personal lives of each of the passengers spill out before our very eyes, lives that are normally kept hidden in a city of strangers. The film is an incredible exploration of fear, complicity, and even bravery. It is the kind of film that whisks you off your feet, absorbs you in another world, and makes you question everything you really believe in.
Shot in ultra-realistic black & white with piercing edgy performances by the entire cast, including Thelma Ritter and a young Beau Bridges. In terms of drama it has an emotional intensity that is firing on all cylinders. It's confrontational as hell, revealing a range of insights into human nature. The entire movie takes place over the course of a couple of hours, so actually the movie is almost in 'real time.' A nail-biting thriller set in the concrete jungle of the 60s, but one that throws us into a situation that is still alive today. It shows how social dynamics work, and that when we are separated from each other and only think of ourselves, we are easily controlled and manipulated. Another blast from the past, and another outrageously rare screening. A film you won't forget....
This will be a high-definition projection.
