Discussion evening - Indigenous Feminism

"Feminism was presented initially to me as a political tool that addressed the oppression of Women. When I say I am a Black Feminist I mean I recognise that my primary oppression came as a result of my blackness, my Aboriginality, as well as my womanness and therefore my struggles on all these fronts are inseperable. A willingess and preparedness by white women to listen to Aboriginal women's experiences is not enough. Cultural and racial components of white feminity and histories have to be interrogated and dissected in a relational way, including the limitations of White Feminism, as we know it now."

Intersectionality is a new buzz word. This reading/discussion group is to discuss and learn about indigenous intersectionality and white feminism. The aim is to educate ourselves. One aim is to consider what is meant by the above quote and another is to discuss but not conclude on what White Feminism can do to make space for women of colour.

To begin our discussion, we will focus on a chapter from Talkin' Up To A White Woman by Aileen Moreton-Robinson. Chapter four, Little Bit Woman.

If you have another text that you'd like to share please bring it along to read to the group.

If you don't have time to do the reading, join us anyway for some thoughts on indigenous women and feminism.
