Vampires: Ganja & Hess
This Halloween season, we celebrate one of the horror genre's most loved and feared villains: the vampire. Immortal, tortured, and tragically-romantic, these fanged fiends haunt the shadows of cinema history. Tonight we present Bill Gunn's singular experimental horror film Ganja & Hess (1973).
After archaeologist Dr. Hess Green’s (Duane Jones) research assistant stabs him with an ancient dagger, he awakes with a thirst for human blood. Hess soon falls in love with his assistant’s widow Ganja (Marlene Clark), sending him into a romantic and spiritual crisis. Bill Gunn’s hallucinatory arthouse horror film is one of the unsung classics of black independent cinema. With its surreal visuals, trance-like score and introspective performances, Ganja & Hess is a trippy, free associative exploration of addiction, racial identity and spiritual redemption. You’ve never seen a vampire movie quite like it. Watch the trailer.
Directed by Bill Gunn, 1973, USA, 112 min. Screened in English with English subtitles.
