The Connection is a work by the experimental filmmaker Shirley Clarke, one of the very few female filmmakers active in the sixties, of whom we were lucky enough to screen the fantastic Portrait of Jason last year. In this semi-documentary based on a play by Jack Gelber, she records a group of junkies waiting in a New York apartment for the arrival of their dealer, the connection. Pay particular attention to the amazing soundtrack by legendary jazz-saxophone player Jackie McLean. The film is a seminal work for socially engaged experimental films and made history by winning a court case against the strong censorship laws of the time.
