Long time no see!
Feminist Club Amsterdam is back with a Feminist Film Screening. During Feminist Film Screenings we screen small-production films that bravely break down barriers and norms, are seen as controversial by some feminist circles and/or the general public and are often centred around a specific taboo. This time we present to you: Women Without Men!
This movie, directed by Iranian born Shirin Neshat, profiles the lives of four women living in Tehran in 1953, during the American-backed coup that overtrowed the democratically elected Prime minister and let the Shah (king) of Iran return to the power. With this Shirin would like to remind Westerners that the American and British governments were directly responsible for overthrowing a democratic system in Iran and how this still affects the current political climate in Iran.
Shirin is a visual artist whose artworks often center on the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, antiquity and modernity, and bridging the spaces between these subjects. The movie Women Without Men is based on Shahrnush Parsipur’s very well-known novel with the same title that has been banned for many years in Iran. This movie gives us an insight in an often underrepresented culture: a must-see!
After the movie there will be a discussion where you can openly share your thoughts and opinions.

Accesibilty: The venue is wheelchair accessible, there is a high doorstep but we will arrange some kind of plateau/wooden shelf to make It possible. There are no wheelchair friendly toilets.

Entrance: Free!! There is a bar at Vondelbunker for those who would like to have a drink! Food is allowed so feel free to bring some popcorn, chips or other bites. You might want to bring a sweater or coat because it might be a little cold inside!
Other information
The film will have English subtitles. There is no sign interpreter.
There is no microphone, discussions will probably be held in smaller groups so everyone has the time and space to talk.
NB: Because this day is also the Kontra-bar night of De Vondelbunker bringing your own drinks won’t be possible (food is okay) you can buy a drink at the bar. There is not ATM so bring some cash!
