Margem Book Club Meeting with writer Aline Valek
Short url:
Margem is a book club for Brazilian immigrants and Portuguese speakers living in the Netherlands. "Margem" means border or margin in Portuguese, and it can refer to the borders of a country or the margins of a book. In our meetings, we discuss various themes related to our experience as immigrants living abroad and other topics.
Since 2022, we have been meeting on the last Sunday of each month in different cities around the country to talk about books previously suggested by our community. In September, we will be meeting in Amsterdam in NieuwLand and hosting a meeting to discuss the book "Cidades afundam em dias normais" (no English translation available yet) written by the Brazilian author Aline Valek. Aline lives in Germany and will be our special guest at this event. Our meeting will take up to 3 hours, and it is free of charge - you only need to read the book.
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist alternative to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods.
To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc).
NieuwLand is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not. The nearest public spaces with larger toilets are Wereld Museum Amsterdam (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-17) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7).
