It's always the others who die. The old perhaps, the sick. But what if death is closer than we think? And our lives are more unpredictable than we think?
Katja Lewina has known about her heart condition for two years and that it could cost her her life at any time. She was diagnosed shortly after the sudden death of her seven-year-old son. All of a sudden, the possibility of dying became part of her everyday life.
Based on her own situation, she explores an experience that ultimately affects us all. What does our finiteness do to love? How do we explain this to our children? What do we want to leave behind? What do we get out of our lives - should we take it easy for the sake of our health and miss out on a lot or, on the contrary, step on the gas? How do people react to illness and death? Are there right and wrong words? What should be clarified and what should be forgotten?
Katja Lewina addresses these questions in eleven essays without the usual carpe diem platitudes, but with plenty of no-bullshit sauce. And the unpleasant reminder: dying concerns us all.
Katja Lewina was born in Moscow in 1984 and studied Slavic studies as well as literature and religious studies. She worked as a freelance editor and in artist management. Today she is a freelance author for well-known media.
