FCA Book Club - Women, Race & Class by Angela Y. Davis
Short url:
In our January meeting we’ll be discussing the book Women, Race & Class by Angela Y. Davis. Published in 1981, the political activist, scholar, author, and speaker writes about the history of social and political influences of whiteness and elitism in feminism. She contextualises in 13 chapters - which can be seen as individual essays - the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, while she also discusses communist women and education with liberation. In addition [trigger warning] rape and the myth of the black rapist as well as birth control and reproduction rights will be discussed

We’ll meet on Sunday 21st of January at 16:30 at NieuwLand
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin)
Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist alternative to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods
To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc)
NieuwLand is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not
The nearest public spaces with larger toilets are Wereld Museum Amsterdam (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-17) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7)
If you have access needs regarding the event, that you feel may not be in place, please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these
We understand that it can be daunting to attend events where you don't yet know anyone. If you feel worried or socially anxious about attending and would like to meet first, reach out
If you want to attend the session but find it difficult to get hold of the book we will try to help
If there are topics or questions you would like to discuss please feel free to mail us or ask them at the meeting in person
Like the FCA more generally we aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher please read our code of conduct to find out what behaviors we hope for from you, and hold ourselves to in our sessions (http://www.thefeministclub.nl/coc)
We are looking forward to discuss the work of this important civil rights activist with you!
