The Solutions Are Already Here // As Soluções Já Cá Estão
An anticolonial, anticapitalist response to the ecological crisis

Technocrats, NGOs, governments, and even the oil companies are all lining up behind the Paris Agreement, renewable energies, and Green New Deals: in a word, green capitalism. In a forthcoming book, Peter Gelderloos looks at how reducing a complex ecological crisis to the sole issue of climate change, and separating human, social problems from environmental problems, makes it impossible to effectively address the problem. Furthermore, industrial scale renewable energies, the push for net zero emissions, and other aspects of Paris and the Green New Deal, are worsening environmental racism, leading to more deaths on the borders and the murders of more Indigenous and peasant land defenders, and fueling a huge land grab throughout the Global South on a scale similar to the wave of colonialism unleashed by the European invasion of the Americas at the end of the 15th century.

However, effective solutions to the ecological crisis that can help us build a future where we put an end to mass extinction and ecocide, and also to hunger, dispossession, and racist oppression, are already popping up all around the world. These solutions range from Indigenous land defense and land reclamation to lower class initiatives for urban transformation, struggles for food sovereignty, community-led reforestation efforts, and massive direct action against destructive infrastructure. Though the experts are studiously ignoring these solutions or helping repress them, all they need is our support to be able to grow and help us fix the problem on a global scale.

Peter Gelderloos is an anarchist from Virginia, and the author of several books, including How Nonviolence Protects the State (2005), Anarchy Works (2010), The Failure of Nonviolence (2013), and Worshiping Power: An Anarchist View of Early State Formation (2017). He lives in Catalunya.
