Last month marked the late Federico Fellini's 100th birthday. To celebrate il Maestro's centennial, we present some of the most influential and iconic films from his five decade career. Tonight we watch his acclaimed satire on Italian fascism Amarcord (1973).

Once upon a time, there was an Italian coastal town high on the promise of a radiant future under the lead of "Il Duce" Mussolini. With his classic Amarcord (“I remember,” in the director’s dialect) Federico Fellini looks back at the expectations of 30s Italy through a collective portrait of a family and of the town in which they live. Pulling away from the gritty postwar neorealist takes on fascism, Fellini turns to comedy to describe a playful and naive society dancing on the edge of disaster. He sets up a dreamlike, grotesque never-ending carnival to reflect on the state of perennial adolescence promised under the authoritative protection of fascism. The result - winner of the 1973 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film - is one of the major cinematic achievements of all time and one of the highlights of 70s Italian cinema. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Federico Fellini, 1973, Italy, 124 mins. In Italian with English subtitles.
