Class of '99: Election (20th Anniversary!)
20 years ago, the world was in the grip of pre-millennial tension and Y2K fever. Popular filmmakers responded with a dizzying assortment of eccentric and visionary movies that pushed the formal, thematic and narrative boundaries of the medium. Tonight we watch Alexander Payne's wicked high school satire Election, starring Reese Witherspoon.
Ambitious high schooler Tracy (Reese Witherspoon) is determined to win the election for student body class president. Straitlaced civics teacher Jim (Matthew Broderick) doesn't trust Tracy, and encourages popular football player Paul (Chris Klein) to run against her. As the campaign gets dirty, Jim finds himself locked in a power struggle with Tracy. Alexander Payne's sophomore film is an uproarious and nasty satire, staged in the low stakes arena of high school politics. Through the playful use of multiple narrators, freeze frames and ironic music cues, Payne crafts a brilliant and rude comedy about everyday ethics. Though it failed at the box office, Election is now considered a cult classic, which introduced audiences to ferociously funny star Witherspoon, and laid the groundwork for Payne's later successes (Sideways, About Schmidt & Nebraska).
