Welcome to the Vondelbunker!
The Vondelbunker is an autonomous cultural center run by volunteers who share the conviction that space is political. The bunker in its current form has been open since June 2011, hosting an unruly and dynamic cultural programme.
Who we are
The bunker is run by a small collective of volunteers in a non-hierarchical manner, none of which get paid. However, since we are not a squatted space, nor do we get any funding, there are basic expenses that need to be covered. This is why we ask for donations: to pay our rent, electricy bills and other costs (total up to more than 1.100 euro each month). All of the artists and programmers involved in the events are here because they believe it isn’t all about money. We never charge the public or the event organizers, but we encourage donations to support the artists for their time, energy and expenses.
We run the bunker according to the following basic principles:
We strive to be a safe, inclusive space. This means we want you to express yourself, be free, participate, make friends and have a great time in the bunker, but please ensure you are respectful of other people’s boundaries! We don’t tolerate any kind of discrimination or offensive behaviour. This includes (but is not limited to) racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, aggression, intimidation, sexual harassment, taking photos/videos of others without their consent, VIP behaviour and being a general asshole. People being disrespectful and exhibiting any of the above behaviours to our volunteers or fellow guests will be asked to leave, and may be banned from the space. If you feel uncomfortable, harassed or don’t feel well, talk to one of the crew, and we will take action. You always have our support, as we hope we have yours. Help us create a community!
We also ask you to..
Be mindful of our surroundings. Don’t be too loud outside, throw your trash in the bin, bring your bottles back to the bar or leave them in a crate. No smoking inside. No hard drugs. You are responsible for yourself and your belongings while at the bunker. Always keep an eye on your drink and your possessions.
Why we do it?
We do this out of love for the space and the underground There are not many free spaces left in the city center of Amsterdam. Gentrification is taking over and we are being pushed to the outskirts of the city. We feel it is an act of resistance to continue running our space with our non-commercial ideals in the central city. The success of our events isn’t measured by revenue – culture has value beyond money! We have a DIY approach and try to host a diverse range of events and programmers who struggle to organize events in other profit-driven spaces in Amsterdam. We want people to experiment with different ideas, styles and concepts, and of course have a great time in the process.
Join the collective!
We’re always looking for fresh blood and new faces, so get in touch if you’re keen to organize or volunteer! You can talk to one of the crew, or email us on info (@) vondelbunker.nl Organize: do you feel like engaging with our space, bringing in your thoughts and your ideas? Are you currently looking for a suitable place for your exhibition or performance, or do you have something else in mind? We are always looking for enthusiastic people and new ideas. We work together with organizations as equals and are able to offer a free space, open for experimentation.
Volunteer: you can also join us as a volunteer and give us a hand at the bar or get involved with lighting, sound engineering, programming, etc.
We don't rent out the Vondelbunker, all events are publicy open.
