Bong Hits: Memories of Murder
Short url:
Bong Joon-ho's sensational Oscar winning Parasite has become a global phenomenon, introducing international audiences to the South Korean director's masterful mix of genre thrills and sharp social commentary. In this program, we look back at Bong's earlier domestic and international successes, tracing the evolution of his singular vision. Tonight we look at his masterful serial killer thriller Memories of Murder (2003).
In 1986, as protests erupt against South Korea's military dictatorship, two young women are found raped and murdered in the countryside. Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho), an impulsive rural cop, teams up with Seo Tae-yoon, (Kim Sang-kyung), a big city detective, to find the country's first serial killer. Loosely based on a true story, Bong's second feature is a gripping police procedural, which unfolds against a backdrop of paranoia and political unrest. Just as in Parasite, Bong blurs genre lines, combining dread and suspense with explosive bursts of black comedy. Bong regular Song Kang-ho brings his shambling charisma to the role of Park, adding levity to this dark detective tale. Watch the trailer.
Directed by Bong Joon-ho, 2003, South Korea, 131 minutes. In Korean w/ English subtitles.
