MOTHRA 1961 Directed by Ishirô Honda 101 minutes In Japanese with English subtitles
One of the most charming creatures in all of the Japanese 'monster movies' is the one that gets her own role in this flick. The previous Godzilla films were getting pretty dreary, but here we have something far more subtle and feminine... and its been given a wild injection of bright bold colors.
A couple of nightclub businessmen visit a strange exotic island that has been used for testing atomic bombs. There they find miniature female twins who sing otherworldly melodies. The entrepreneurs kidnap the mini-girls, which brings the dormant Mothra to life. The surprisingly rich storyline involves corporate greed, nuclear testing, and totally bizarre mysticism. The science fiction and fantasy elements blend well, and the designs are amazing. But the real charmer is Mothra - a fuzzy, devastatingly cute creature, but one that has no qualms about destroying anything in her path when something sacred has been stolen. Many people have fallen in love with this charming monster, which is actually a colorful, giant, ancient female moth. The hand-crafted special effects are by the legendary Eiji Tsuburaya.
This will be a high-definition screening.
