DON'T LOOK NOW 1973
Directed by Nicolas Roeg
110 minutes

This mystery film is often pushed into the horror genre box, and indeed there certainly are reasons for that. But this label is misleading and tends to ignore the supreme beauty of this cult film crafted by Nick Roeg (Performance). For me, this is one of the best mood-films ever made. It plays with our instincts and inner voices.... whereas these days horror films are typically drenched in gore. Instead, this film touches the soul. It's definitely one of the most stylish mystery films ever made, and is based on a short story by the mystery writer Daphne du Maurier.
Following the drowning of their child in England, Laura (Julie Christie) and John (Donald Sutherland) go to Venice, where they come into contact with a pair of creepy old sisters, one of whom can "see" visions even though she is blind. This leads the wife to go on a psychic hunt in search of the soul of their dead daughter.
Director Roeg, a former cinematographer for directors like David Lean and Francois Truffaut, crafts an eerie vision of Venice as a damp, crumbling and eternally dying city... and indeed his visionary compositions help to make the city itself one of the main characters of the film. Cut with a dreamlike editing which allows mystery and blurs the borders between reality and illusion, this is a surreal and perplexing film... and because its storyline is essentially mysterious, Roeg's experimental filmmaking fits the content perfectly.
This will be a super-high 4k projection.
