An outdoor screening in collaboration with Tweede Nassau Ateliers! Come and watch films in the building where the studio scenes from Turks Fruit were shot. Also to be seen is a mold for the sculpture that played an important role in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. The main film of the evening is Where the Rats Are King: a documentary about the rebellious eighties in the Staatsliedenbuurt, our neighbourhood. Besides that we will also show a selection of short films, and there will be a Q&A with director Barbara van den Uyl afterwards.
The Amsterdam Staatsliedenbuurt was a kind of free state where squatters, punks and original local residents together laid down the laws. The authority of the municipality was reduced to almost zero since Mayor Van Thijn was brutally evicted from the neighborhood at the end of '84. Barbara den Uyl, herself one of the residents of the Staatsliedenbuurt, filmed for more than a year how the residents fought out their struggle with the system. A battle that was not limited to housing problems, but also about neo-Nazis, prisoners and the Pope.
