Come celebrate the cinematic art of the giallo. Baroque, preposterous, unbelievably dramatic, hilariously gory and almost always erotic, these classic Italian thrillers are perfect viewing on a warm summer night. And since these overheated guilty pleasures are a form of cinematic comfort food, we're offering a free scoop of ice cold gelato with your ticket. Tonight we present Dario Argento's blood-splattered masterpiece Deep Red (1975) with Sergio Martino's sensual thriller The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971).

Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) @ 19:00

Jazz pianist Marcus (David Hemmings) witnesses the murder of a psychic medium through an apartment window in Rome. When he's identified as the prime suspect, Marcus teams up with Gianna (Daria Nicolodi), an ambitious reporter, to find the killer. Dario Argento's unnerving classic combines cat and mouse suspense and brutal horror with sly gender commentary. Featuring typically audacious camerawork and color schemes, and backed by one of Goblin's most mesmerizing scores, Deep Red is considered by many to be the maestro's masterpiece. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Dario Argento, 1975, Italy, 127 minutes. In Italian w/ English subtitles.

The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh @ 21:30

Upon her return to Vienna, Mrs. Wardh (Edwige Fenech), the mysterious wife of the American ambassador, is overwhelmed by memories of the kinky and toxic relationship with her ex-boyfriend Jean (Ivan Rassimov). While she seeks safety in a new affair with playboy George (George Hilton), Jean’s sudden re-emergence makes the news of a serial killer in town even more sinister. Sergio Martino’s first giallo - enriched by Nora Orlandi’s spellbinding soundtrack (later used by Tarantino in Kill Bill) - is a soft, sensual thriller and an absolute must-see for all fans of the genre. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Sergio Martino, 1971, Italy, 100 minutes. In English.
