Are you a fan of Black Mirror? The return of Netflix's wildly popular sci-fi anthology series has left us hungry for more visionary tales of technological dystopia. In this series, we look back at our favorite examples of future shock cinema: heady films that explore the ways technology is reshaping society and human subjectivity. Please join us for a screening of Alex Rivera's prescient sci-fi thriller Sleep Dealer (2008).

In the Mexico of the future, the border is heavily militarized and policed by US drones, while water is controlled by a private company. Memo (Luis Fernando Peña) leaves his drought-stricken village for the city and finds work in a virtual reality factory remotely operating a construction robot in the United States, through nodes implanted in his arms. When he meets Luz (Leonor Varela), a journalist who makes a living uploading and selling digital memories, Memo discovers the troubling secrets behind a recent tragedy. Shot on a shoestring budget, Alex Rivera's debut thriller sketches a scarily plausible vision of the future. In Sleep Dealer, Mexican workers are exploited for cybernetic labor, without ever physically crossing the border. But here, as in the best science fiction, technology also offers hope for resistance as Memo and Luz plug in and hack their way through digital borders in their pursuit of justice. Watch the trailer.

Directed by Alex Rivera, 2008, USA/Mexico, 90 min. In English and Spanish w/ English subtitles.
