Room at the top

Short url:

ROOM AT THE TOP   1959 Directed by Jack Clayton 112 minutes In English

Man, what a devastating film this is. Big themes like ambition, sex and greed are boiled down to an unsensationalized everyday story that takes place in 1950s Yorkshire. When it first hit the screens it was absolutely groundbreaking, helping create a new wave of British realist filmmaking. Today it still carries as much punch as it did then, but has even gained a bit of charm. It stars Laurence Harvey, but the real shinning light for me is the glowing performance by French actress Simone Signoret in one of her few English speaking roles --  indeed, she won both the Academy Award and the Cannes award for best actress for this film. Based on the novel of the same name by John Braine, the film follows the path of a blue-collar anti-hero, coming from a small industrial town, who will do anything to get to the top. But of course there is always a price to be paid for everything - and boy, in this case what a price!

In Room at the Top director Jack Clayton is at the peak of his form - his next film would be the legendary ghost-story The Innocents - and these two films together would end up being his two masterpieces. It also has a powerhouse cameo by Hermione Baddeley, and her performance was the shortest to be nominated for an acting Oscar- she had 2 minutes and 20 seconds of screen time!

One viewer's response: "Although Room at the Top is set in Britain just after WWII, Americans of today will recognize in Joe Lambton the prototype of a yuppie – an offensively pushy, horny and self-obsessed social climber with no concern for the feelings of others, but a winning charm that pushes him all the way to the top. One of the best of the British angry young man genre. I have seen this film 17 times already, and I will see it many more times, if I'm lucky."

This will be a high-definition projection.
