Georgian cinema has a long history, reaching through the country’s turbulent past to the birth of the medium. Admired by classical filmmakers across the world for its unique cinematography, Georgia fashioned a rich cinema tradition with a treasure trove of classics that are often overlooked by international audiences. In honor of Georgian Independence Day (the 26th of May) we present Georgia on My Mind, a weekend-long program, showcasing a trio of rarely-screened films.

Varlam Aravidze (Avtandil Makharadze), the mayor of a small Georgian town, has died. As the townsfolk mourn their leader, his exhumed body suddenly appears in his son’s garden. Confused officials bury the body again, only to repeatedly find it in the garden each day. After the mysterious perpetrator is caught, a trial ensues which reveals Aravidze’s long history of corruption. Tengiz Abuladze's masterful tragicomic allegory of Stalinism was shelved after one screening, until the emergence of a more tolerant political climate in the Soviet Union. Farcical, surreal, and sometimes hilarious, Repentance tells an imaginative story of lives tossed around by the caprices of a totalitarian regime.

Directed by Tengiz Abuladze, 1984, Georgia, 153 minutes, In Georgian w/ English subtitles.
