ON THE SILVER GLOBE 1988 (Na srebrnym globie) Directed by Andrzej Żuławski 164 minutes In Polish with English subtitles
Andrzej Żuławski's films can be emotionally intense, but always in a surreal otherworldly way. He cranked out a film called Possession with Isabelle Adjani that still remains one of the most disturbing films of all times. When he was still living in Poland, he shot this science fiction epic, but the production was stopped half way. The Polish government had changed, and the new honchos in charge cancelled the entire project. He was bitter, and left for France, but years later he returned to Poland and re-worked the material he had shot, added some new images, and completed the film as close to his original idea as possible. What emerged was a psychedelic masterpiece, which is considered by some to be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
Based on a novel his granduncle Jerzy Żuławski wrote almost a hundred years earlier, in this sci-fi flick Andrzej Żuławski tells the story of a group of travelers who leave Earth to start a colony on the Moon in order to keep civilization alive. But what happens is the opposite of what they expect, when the adults die off and the children become more pagan and start inventing new myths and gods. It has been described as a fusion of Andrei Tarkovsky and Alejandro Jodorowsky. Because it was banned by both the Communist and capitalist elites, this flawed gem has rarely ever been screened.
As one critic concluded it is "One of cinema's most stunning extravagances and the most frightening art film you will ever see."
This will be a high-definition projection.
