Women's Work: Milla
Short url:
Cinema of the Dam'd is proud to present Women's Work, an ongoing series of recent films by emerging female directors. Tonight we look at Valérie Massadian award-winning character study Milla (2017).
17-year-old Milla (Severine Jonckeere) and her boyfriend Leo (Luc Chessel) live on the margins of French society in a small seaside town. They squat in abandoned buildings, playing house with a handful of scavenged belongings. Through a series of unexpected events, this simple arrangement is disrupted and transformed. Valérie Massadian's moving observational drama traces Milla's journey from dislocation to domesticity, finding poetry in the mundane moments of everyday life. Massadian's expressive play with light and color makes Milla a work of delicate beauty and uncommon sensitivity. Newcomer Jonckeere, in a role drawn from her own life experience, infuses her performance with matter-of-fact humanity and quiet resilience. Watch the trailer.
