Opera (Dario Argento)
Short url:
OPERA 1987 Directed by Dario Argento 107 minutes In Italian with English subtitles
Made during one of director Dario Argento's most eclectic periods, many feel it was his last great explosion of surrealism before he lost his touch. Filled with his trademark swirling and prowling camerawork, it remains a stylized Italian 'giallo' horror movie, but one that is actually a tribute to the Grand Guignol theatre in Paris. Here Argento fuses the world of grande opera with the Guignol's twisted darker side. In fact, because of this film, we can now re-interpret most of Argento's early films as a kind of opera - with their bright bold colors and their predilection for unrestrained flamboyance.
This flick centers on a production of Verdi's Macbeth in Rome. When a singer suddenly becomes ill, replacement singer Betty suddenly has her chance to take the lead role. This brings her fame, but also something she wasn't expecting... a stalker. The person who is haunting her is no normal assailant. Instead of threatening to kill her, he forces her to watch as he kills her best friends. The first murder might have some plausibility, but when it happens over and over the entire scenario begins to feel like a reoccurring fever-dream. It is "gorgeously over the top" with lush visuals, bizarre plotting, sharp direction, some bad acting and a typically wild soundtrack that brings together Verdi, heavy metal, Claudio Simonetti, and Brian Eno. But let's be clear: Although his films can have excessive violence in them, it is a stylized kind, often working with our imagination... and they have nothing to do with the dumbed-down, low-res, horror-porn that so many movies have been reduced to today. Argento's flicks are always high-octane creativity, and are more like cinematic explosions of expressionism.
This will be a high-definition screening.
