Direct action for forest: some experiences from Poland

Short url:

There are still some natural forests in Europe, probably less than 1% of what was here a thousand years ago. So they must be well protected and free of any exploitation, right?

No, not really. Bialowieza Forest (Poland), the UNESCO world heritage site and the last natural forest of European lowlands, was invaded with heavy duty logging machines in 2017. 200,000 trees were cut and sold, mostly for pallets.
In response a grassroots social movement was born that used direct action to protect the forest from state-sanctioned logging. More than 1,500 people from all over the world engaged in the Camp for the Forest - an anti-authoritarian informal group built on principles of non-violence and solidarity.

After the European Court of Justice ruled that logging was illegal (surprise, surprise), it has stopped, temporarily... The camp is still there, running tourist info point, keeping an eye on authorities' plans and dealing with legal (and psychological) consequences of civil disobedience.

Come and join the meeting if you want to listen to experiences from organizing the movement, discuss its relevance for your actions, and maybe get convinced to join/support the struggle going on in Polish forests.

For the common good, against exploitative logic of the market.
